Summer School 2022
7 October 2024
We ran our popular summer school for local children again in 2022. Thanks to support from Active Cornwall, we offered free places to children who receive free school meals, as well as free places for Ukrainian children who had recently moved to our area.
We ran our summer school two days per week over two weeks of the summer holidays. The first week was aimed at younger children and the 2nd week older primary aged children (all children were aged between 5-11years).
Each week we had one day in the Community Garden (doing activities such as archery, painting, clay-work and themed games (Gruffalo and Harry Potter); the second day was a split between seashore activities on the rocky beach and craft activities in the hall, (rock pooling, fish-printing, tile making etc.).
We had volunteers each day coming into the hall to prepare healthy packed lunches for all of the children and we provided extra snacks for the children who arrived without breakfast.
We engaged two experienced practitioners who led the activities each day and they were supported by a member of staff and volunteers.
We had a total of 35 children who attended (including 11 children who were eligible for Free School Meals) There were a total of four children we supported who had Special Educational Needs or Disability (SEND). Prior to the sessions we spoke to the parent of each child with SEND to discuss the specific needs and type of support that we could give.
During the two weeks of our programme, there were weather warnings due to extremely high temperatures. Because of this we had to slightly change some of the activities planned and create more sheltered areas to protect the children. We reduced the number of ‘active’ activities (running games etc.) and replaced these with more crafting/storytelling activities that we do in the shade. By attending our events or hiring the hall you are helping to fund our community projects. If you would like to make a donation you can do so here.
Here are some of the comments we received:
“My daughter LOVED the day she had and came back very excited telling me what she’d done and showing me the things she’d made. Brilliant, thank you!!”
“Always a wonderful experience for my children. Most importantly INCLUSIVE in all aspects. Both children prefer this summer school to any others we have attended.”
“The review from my kids is: “Summer school was brilliant, we loved all of the activities.” As a parent, it is great to know I’m leaving my children in such safe hands and know they will have fun, learn new things, make friends and get active.”
