Children’s Wellbeing

Good mental and emotional wellbeing starts in childhood. To support local children, we run a summer school and a range of other projects for school-age children with local partners, including a nature photography initiative.

Our holiday activity club for local children runs during the summer holidays. We offer a full day of activities twice a week over several weeks, including rock pooling, den building, bug spotting, drama, crafts and games. We use our community garden, the nearby beach and fantastic facilities in the Solomon Browne Hall itself to give the children a variety of great locations for fun and learning.

Children are all given a healthy lunch, which is prepared by our volunteers. 80% of the children who attended our most recent summer school received free school meals and several had additional needs. Our summer school has been particularly valuable in providing an opportunity to socialise with peers and have fun after the isolation of the Covid-19 lockdowns.

We also run other projects to support local school-age children. In 2021 we worked with psychiatrist Dr Lynne Jones and the Penwith Landscape Partnership on a Children’s Nature Photography project with pupils from Mousehole School. The children enjoyed a photography workshop and were given a camera to use on a trip into the local countryside. The children each chose their favourite photograph to feature in an exhibition at the Solomon Browne Hall. The exhibition took place when the G7 was held nearby in Carbis Bay, and the children also shared their message to the G7 leaders.

By attending our events or hiring the hall you are helping to fund our community projects. If you would like to make a donation you can do so here.

“My daughter loved every minute, and she came home full of energy and excitement from what she’d learned and made”

“Both of my children have varying additional needs. It was a much-needed break in the summer for them to learn new skills and make new friends.”

“I want to be a nature boy, not a screen boy who’s inside all day. Nature’s more interesting. YouTube is cool, and gaming, but nature is more important. It helps us breathe, it helps us live, how can we do without it?”

“All primary schools should do projects like this. The exhibition was very inspiring and the messages from the children were so thoughtful.”

“What a moving and inspirational exhibition – it gives me hope that these children will be taking care of our plant in the future.  Spread their words – so clearly stated. Out of the mouth of babes!”
